Xanthe was still drifting in a state of euphoria when she arrived at the cute little lilac Victorian with white gingerbread trim. Tripp\u2019s truck was parked on the street, his woodworking business logo on the side.<\/p>\r\n

The sun had set, but Mae had lanterns at the front garden gate and little fairy lights strung throughout the garden. They lit the way up the brick walkway to the front porch where a big rainbow flag hung beneath a sign that read EVERYONE Welcome Here<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n

The moment she started up the wooden front steps, a chorus of high-pitched barking started up inside. She hadn\u2019t even made it to the welcome mat when the door opened and Mae stood there with a warm smile.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cHello, young lady.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cHi.\u201d Xanthe couldn\u2019t help the huge grin on her face. \u201cGuess what?\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cLachlan and I just freed an entangled humpback.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cOh, that\u2019s amazing! I\u2019ve been following the story on social media.\u201d She engulfed Xanthe in a hug, her three little rescue mutts yipping and sniffing insistently at Xanthe\u2019s feet and ankles.<\/p>\r\n

\u201cI\u2019m all gross and sweaty. I didn\u2019t have time to clean up.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Mae snorted and squeezed her harder. \u201cI don\u2019t care. I\u2019m so, so proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Xanthe\u2019s heart swelled at the praise. Mae was like everyone\u2019s grandmother, but this made Xanthe miss her stepdad even more. She wished she could have called him to tell him the news. Wherever his spirit was now, hopefully he already knew. \u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Mae stepped back. \u201cCome inside. You must be starving.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cFamished.\u201d She followed Mae into the house, inhaling deeply. \u201cIt smells divine in here.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

\u201cGood, because I made plenty. We\u2019re eating out back. Hope that\u2019s okay. I\u2019ve got blankets out there if you feel chilly.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Through the French doors that led out to the patio, she could see three people sitting at the table. \u201cSounds perfect.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

She stepped through the doors and onto the patio nestled in the center of Mae\u2019s back garden. Smiled when Tripp and Willow both looked over at her. \u201cHi, guys. Sorry I\u2019m\u2014\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Her smile froze when the third person at the table turned around in his chair. Stared in shock at Blaine Slater\u2019s handsome face. \u201cLate,\u201d she finished, shooting an accusing look at Mae.<\/p>\r\n

Her good mood was gone. Killed dead in an instant.<\/p>\r\n
